Description

A comfort food classic made easy with slow cooking—tender beef patties in savory mushroom gravy that tastes like home, ready with minimal effort.


Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko or regular)
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs (thyme, oregano, or Italian seasoning)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 packet (1 oz) onion soup mix
  • 8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire, mustard, herbs, salt, and pepper. Do not overmix.
  2. Shape into 6–8 oval patties. Press thumb in center of each.
  3. Optional: Brown patties in skillet, 2–3 min per side.
  4. Place sliced mushrooms in bottom of slow cooker.
  5. Layer patties over mushrooms in a single layer.
  6. Mix broth, soup, soup mix, tomato paste, and Worcestershire. Pour over patties.
  7. Cook on LOW 7–8 hrs or HIGH 4–5 hrs until patties reach 160°F.
  8. Optional: 30 min before end, stir in cornstarch slurry for thicker gravy.

Notes

Avoid overmixing the meat to keep patties tender. Use a 6-quart slow cooker for best results. For make-ahead, refrigerate formed patties up to 24 hours.
